Tech Neck Epidemic: Sydney Chiro Combating the Modern Posture Problem

Tech Neck Epidemic: Combating the Modern Posture Problem
Hey, it’s Dr. Izzy here—your Sydney chiropractor (or your next chiro 😉).
Let’s face it—we love our devices. Phones, laptops, tablets, smartwatches... they’re not going anywhere. But with every hour spent looking down, scrolling, typing, and swiping, your neck and spine are paying the price.
It’s called Tech Neck, and it’s quickly becoming one of the most common modern posture problems I see in the studio at BRAIN TO BODY®.
Whether you're a lawyer, designer, student, or parent—if you're spending hours a day on screens, chances are, it's showing up in your posture, your breathing, and your energy levels.
Let’s unpack what Tech Neck really is—and more importantly, what you can do about it.
What Is Tech Neck?
Tech Neck is the term used to describe forward head posture and spinal strain caused by looking down at screens for prolonged periods.
When your head shifts forward (even just a few centimetres), the weight your neck muscles have to support dramatically increases.
To give you a visual:
- Your head weighs around 5–6kg.
- But for every 2.5cm your head moves forward, your neck is managing up to 20kg of pressure.
Over time, this can lead to:
⚠️ Stiffness in the neck and upper back
⚠️ Headaches or migraines
⚠️ Fatigue and brain fog
⚠️ Poor posture and rounded shoulders
⚠️ Numbness or tingling in the arms
⚠️ Changes in breathing, voice, or jaw tension
And the scariest part? It often starts young and goes unnoticed for years—until the symptoms become too loud to ignore.
Why Tech Neck Impacts More Than Just Your Neck
Your spine is your body’s communication highway. When the cervical spine (neck) is pulled forward, it affects your nervous system, breathing mechanics, blood flow, and posture stability.
Here’s what that means for your daily life:
- Your diaphragm function is restricted, leading to shallow chest breathing (aka stress breathing).
- Your brainstem—the part of your nervous system responsible for balance, focus, and energy—may not be communicating efficiently.
- Your body begins to compensate, tightening muscles and shifting your centre of gravity.
Over time, these subtle changes become chronic patterns, and your body starts feeling like it’s running uphill—every single day.
How Chiropractic Helps Reset the Pattern
At BRAIN TO BODY®, we don’t just crack your neck and send you on your way. We look at how your body is holding patterns, why those patterns have formed, and how we can help you create new, stronger ones.
Here’s how we support you through Tech Neck:
✅ Assess your spinal alignment, especially cervical and thoracic regions
✅ Re-pattern your nervous system through precise chiropractic adjustments
✅ Restore balance to your posture and muscle tone
✅ Help you breathe better, move better, and feel more energised
The result? You’re not just managing the symptoms—you’re restoring the function that helps you perform at your best and stay resilient in a screen-based world.
Quick Wins: What You Can Do Today
While chiropractic care is key for long-term correction, here are three things you can start today:
1. Tech Breaks
Every 25–30 minutes, stand up, roll your shoulders, and lift your chin. Let your body reset.
2. Eyes Up
Bring your phone or laptop to eye level—don’t bring your head to your device. Small changes in screen height make a huge difference over time.
3. Breath Check
Place one hand on your chest, one on your belly. Take a breath. If the top hand moves more than the bottom—you're stress breathing. Breathe through your nose, aim to expand your belly and lower ribs.
Let’s Reset the Way You Hold Your Head—And Yourself
If you're tired of neck tension, low energy, and posture that makes you feel older than you are—let’s change that.
Tech Neck is common, but it’s not permanent. With the right guidance, your body can rewire better posture, stronger breathing, and clearer brain-body connection.
Book your first visit at BRAIN TO BODY® and let’s help your neck, spine, and nervous system catch up with the rest of your life.
See you in the studio,
