BRAIN TO BODY® SITE GLOSSARY

Stress (biology)

In biological terms, Stress refers to the body's response to any demand or challenge that disrupts its homeostasis, which can be triggered by both positive and negative experiences. When faced with a stressor, the body's immediate reaction is to activate the sympathetic nervous system, releasing Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This "fight-or-flight" response prepares the body for immediate action, increasing heart rate, blood pressure, and energy supplies, while diminishing functions non-essential for immediate survival.

While acute Stress can be beneficial, providing the necessary alertness and energy to deal with immediate demands, chronic Stress can lead to detrimental health effects. Prolonged exposure to Stress hormones can contribute to a variety of health issues, including cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, anxiety disorders, and immune system suppression.

The biological understanding of Stress emphasizes the complex interplay between the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and various bodily systems. Effective Stress management is crucial for maintaining health and well-being, encompassing strategies such as regular physical activity, relaxation techniques, healthy eating, and adequate sleep. Moreover, developing resilience, the ability to adapt and recover from Stress, is fundamental to coping with life's challenges and minimizing the negative health impacts of chronic Stress.
